Support stockings

Although support stockings are often assumed to be the same as compression stockings or elastic stockings, this assumption is incorrect. Support stockings differ from compression stockings in a number of important regards.

Support stockings and compression stockings are not the same

Support stockings are mainly intended to prevent venous complaints. In contrast to compression stockings, they do not produce a defined pressure distribution, and they are not classified into compression classes. Consequently, they are not a medical aid and are not prescribed by a physician.

Over the counter items

They can however provide relief for minor complaints without clinical significance, for example heavy legs or water retention in the tissues. They are available over the counter in retail stores, drug stores and medical supply stores.
